They go frWhat is a far infrared saunaom very specific questions based on individual needs or interests to very generic questions, the answer to which can be useful to everyone. In this blog post we have listed the 10 most asked questions of the past year. Hopefully they apply to you too and by reading this, you will find out everything you ever wanted to know about our infrared saunas.

Is it a sauna?

A Health Mate far infrared sauna has the same effect as a sauna but has much more to offer. The infrared light has the capacity to warm up objects instead of the air around those objects. Because of this, at temperatures between 45-65 degrees Celsius, your body will experience the same heat as in a traditional sauna at 90 C or more. Also, as the air is much cooler you can stay in for longer and feel comfortable doing so. The end result is that you sweat 2 to 3 times more than in a regular sauna.

On top of the sauna effect you have all the health benefits related to infrared light. It is great for sore muscles and joints and people who suffer from arthritis or fibromyalgia tend to benefit a lot from regular use of their Health Mate infrared sauna. Infrared light is good for the skin, the sweat your body generates helps you to detox, and while doing so, you burn calories as well. Your cardio vascular system gets a gentle workout as the heat exposure causes your heart rate to rise and your blood circulation to increase.  A good far infrared sauna session will make your body release endorphins and has the capacity to make you feel good all day long.

What maintenance does it take?

A Health Mate far infrared sauna does not require any real maintenance. You can dust off the outside like any piece of furniture, and for the inside you just use towels whenever you use it. We recommend you use 3 towels. One on the bench, one for the floor and one to wipe yourself with. You will need it because in a Health Mate infrared sauna, you sweat 2 to 3 times more than in a traditional sauna. If you do feel you need to wipe off the bench or the backrest, use a damp cloth with water only and no detergents.

How will it fit in my home?

Health Mate far infrared saunas come in a range of different sizes. The smallest one takes up only one square metre. Even in small apartments, people put them in the corner of the bedroom, on the landing, in the storage room, etc… They come flat packed as pre-fabricated panels which makes it even easier to install them in small places.

Is it expensive to run?

One of the great things about Health Mate infrared saunas is that they are so cheap to run. 30 – 40 pence for a 30 minute session.  Compared to other wellness related equipment like a hot tub, jacuzzi bath or traditional sauna, a Health Mate home sauna is extremely cheap and efficient.

Is it safe?

Infrared light is safe. It has been used in medical applications for over 40 years now. It is used to keep new born babies warm, physiotherapists use it to treat muscle and joint injuries locally and recently, because of its energy efficiency, it is becoming very popular as a way to warm large public buildings. Infrared light is all around us. Most objects emit it. Even the earth and the human body do so which explains why traditional Chinese practitioners use their hands to heal.

What about the installation?

The installation is done by us and takes no more than 30 minutes. Because of the easy click system that Health Mate has developed, your sauna can be taken apart and assembled again very easily. The solid 4 cm thick cedar wood panels make for a very sturdy construction no matter how many times you dismantle and rebuild it. No tools, screws or nails needed either, just put the panels in place and click them together.

How often do you use it/how long does a session take?

The first couple of weeks, we recommend to use it only 3 times a week. After that you can use it every day. A typical infrared home sauna session is 30 minutes. Some people like longer sessions but we recommend to start with 20 min sessions and slowly increase upto 30 – 40 min. It is better to increase the length of your session than to increase the temperature.

Does it use water?

A Health Mate infrared sauna does not use water. It is a dry sauna. This allows us to integrate extra features like a radio/CD/mp3 player and a light therapy unit.

What happens if I move home?

Because your Health Mate infrared sauna cabin is so easy to assemble, moving home is not a problem. You pull the plug, disconnect the heaters and take apart the panels one by one. It is important to protect the panels during the move  like you would protect any other piece of furniture and once they have reached their new home, you just put them together again.
